All disciplines should wear a boot with a heel, which prevents the foot from slipping through the stirrup. The classic cowboy boot is popular with western riders at competitions, but there is also a lace-up style ankle boot called a roper that many western riders use for everyday riding. English riders usually wear a tall boot, either with laces (called a field boot) or without laces (sometimes called a dress boot). Short paddock boots are also popular, with laces, zippers, or elastic inserts. Half chaps are often worn over the calf to act like a tall boot. Half chaps are made of suede or leather and secured with Velcro or a zipper.
